Short answer: a fractional Chief AI Officer in Australia typically costs about A$8,000–A$18,000 a month for one to two days a week. There’s no reliable published Australian rate yet, so that range is my estimate from the data below. My own fractional Chief AI Officer seat starts from A$12,000 + GST a month for about one day a week, and an AI readiness diagnostic from A$15,000 + GST.
If you’re searching for a part-time head of AI, an outsourced AI lead or an AI strategy adviser, this is the same role under a different name. Here’s what sits behind the price, and what you should expect for it.
Why there’s no standard rate yet
The Chief AI Officer is still a new role. Fractionus, a fractional executive marketplace that tracks verified day rates, publishes figures for Chief AI Officers in the US and the UK but says it doesn’t yet have enough Australian rates to publish one (Fractionus). Expert360, the largest Australian talent marketplace, doesn’t list the role at all.
Three things make the price vary more than for other fractional roles:
- Scope. Some people offering the title write an AI strategy and leave. Others own the roadmap, governance and delivery for months.
- Hands-on build work. Designing and running agentic workflows in production takes more time, and skill, than advising on them.
- Bundling. Some providers price the leadership low because they make their margin on the software or automation they also sell you.
What the data says
| Benchmark | Rate | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Fractional Chief AI Officer, US | US$1,819 a day (70 verified rates), about A$2,600 | Fractionus |
| Fractional Chief AI Officer, UK | US$1,661 a day (14 verified rates), about A$2,370 | Fractionus |
| Fractional Chief AI Officer, Australia | Not published (too few verified rates) | Fractionus |
| Senior fractional executives, Australia | A$1,200–A$2,500 a day | Fractionus |
| Fractional CRO or CMO, Australia | A$10,000–A$18,000 a month | Fractionus |
US dollar figures converted at about US$0.70 to the Australian dollar. All figures exclude GST.
At A$2,000–A$2,600 a day, one day a week (four to five days a month) works out at about A$8,000–A$13,000 a month, and two days a week at roughly double. That’s where my estimated range comes from, and it sits in line with what Australian businesses already pay for a fractional CRO or CMO.
My pricing
| Engagement | What it covers | Price (AUD, ex GST) |
|---|---|---|
| AI readiness diagnostic | About two weeks. Where AI can pay back in your business, what’s in the way, and a 90-day plan the board can back | From A$15,000 |
| Fractional Chief AI Officer | About one day a week, typically 6–12 months. I own the AI roadmap, governance and the first workflows in production | From A$12,000 a month |
| Advisory retainer | One to two days a month as a senior sounding board for the CEO and board | From A$5,000 a month |
More days a week, a regulated environment or significant hands-on build work moves the price up. I always agree a fixed monthly figure before we start.
Fractional versus a full-time Chief AI Officer
There’s no reliable Australian salary survey for the Chief AI Officer title yet. The closest benchmark is the director of AI, who earns an average of about A$236,000 in base salary, with a range of roughly A$236,000–A$251,000 (Think and Grow 2025–26 Australian Tech Salary Guide, via Startup Daily). A true C-suite Chief AI Officer at a large organisation will cost more.
A worked example: year one
| Cost line | Full-time head of AI | Fractional Chief AI Officer (1 day a week) |
|---|---|---|
| Base salary or fees | A$236,000 | A$144,000 (12 × A$12,000) |
| On-costs (super, payroll tax, leave, benefits at ~30%) | A$70,800 | Nil if invoiced through a company |
| Recruitment | Recruiter fee plus a 3–6 month search in a tight market | Nil; typically starts within weeks |
| Year-one cost (ex GST) | About A$306,800 plus recruitment | About A$144,000 |
On-costs of 25–35% above base are the range Fractionus uses for Australian executive hires.
The full-time hire gives you five days a week. The real question for most mid-market companies is whether there’s five days of senior AI leadership to do yet. Usually there isn’t at the start. There’s a strategy to set, two or three use cases to prove and governance to put in place, and one experienced day a week does that well. You can run your own numbers with the fractional vs full-time cost calculator.
Fractional Chief AI Officer, consultant or agency?
| Option | How you pay | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI consultant | Fixed fee for a strategy or assessment | A one-off view of where AI fits | Nobody owns delivery after the report |
| AI agency or integrator | Project fees, often plus ongoing licences | Building a specific solution you’ve already chosen | Advice that favours what they sell |
| Fractional Chief AI Officer | Monthly retainer | Owning the roadmap, governance and results over 6–12 months | Make sure they’ve actually put AI into production |

What you should get for the money
By the end of the first 90 days, a fractional Chief AI Officer should have delivered:
- A short AI roadmap. Two or three use cases where AI should create value, each with an owner, a measure and a budget.
- Governance that fits your size. An AI use policy, a register of AI in use and clear accountability, proportionate rather than bureaucratic. My AI governance checklist and AI use policy template show what that looks like.
- At least one workflow in production, or a clear decision not to proceed, with the numbers to back it.
- A board-ready view of what AI is costing, what it’s saving and what’s next.
If someone can’t tell you what will be different after 90 days, the price doesn’t matter.
What else to budget for
The Chief AI Officer’s fee isn’t your AI budget. Plan separately for:
- Tools and licences, from AI assistants to automation platforms
- Data work to make the information AI depends on usable
- Implementation partners for larger builds or integrations
- Training and change management, so people actually use what you build
A good Chief AI Officer earns their fee here. The biggest saving is often the AI project you don’t start, or stop early.
Why now
The role is spreading fast. Datacom’s 2026 research found that almost half of Australian organisations have already appointed a Chief AI Officer, a share expected to rise to 63% by 2027 (I covered this in does your company need a Chief AI Officer?). Since July 2026, every Commonwealth agency has been required to appoint one (ACS Information Age). Larger organisations are hiring full-time. For a mid-market business, a fractional seat is how you get the same leadership at a cost that matches the opportunity.
Questions to ask before you hire
- What AI have you personally put into production, and what did it save?
- How are you paid, and do you earn anything from the tools you recommend?
- What will be different after 90 days, and how will we measure it?
- How will you keep our data, and our customers’ data, safe?
The bottom line
Budget about A$8,000–A$18,000 a month for a fractional Chief AI Officer one to two days a week, or about A$5,000 a month for advisory support. Compared with a full-time head of AI at around A$300,000 a year, it’s the lower-risk way to get senior AI leadership while you prove where AI pays back.

Common questions
How much does a fractional Chief AI Officer cost in Australia?
Expect roughly A$8,000–A$18,000 a month for one to two days a week. There is no reliable published Australian rate yet, so that range is my estimate from overseas Chief AI Officer day rates and Australian rates for comparable fractional roles. My own fractional Chief AI Officer seat starts from A$12,000 + GST a month for about one day a week.
What does a full-time Chief AI Officer or head of AI cost in Australia?
Directors of AI in Australia earn an average base salary of about A$236,000, according to Think and Grow's 2025–26 tech salary guide. Add 25–35% for super, payroll tax, leave and benefits, and the year-one cost is roughly A$295,000–A$320,000 before recruitment fees, bonuses or equity.
Is a fractional Chief AI Officer cheaper than an AI consultant?
It depends on what you need. A consultant suits a one-off strategy or assessment with a fixed fee. A fractional Chief AI Officer costs a monthly fee but stays to own delivery, governance and results, which is usually where AI programs succeed or fail.
Why do some AI advisers charge much less?
Often because the advice is bundled with software, automation or implementation services they also sell. That isn't wrong, but ask how they are paid. An independent Chief AI Officer is paid by you alone, so the recommendation doesn't depend on which platform you buy.
What else should we budget for besides the Chief AI Officer?
The tools themselves, data work, implementation partners and training. A Chief AI Officer should help you spend that budget well, and a good one often saves more than their fee by stopping AI projects that won't pay back.
